Production of a gas mixture containing CO and H₂ is effected by injecting burning powdered coal with O₂ and steam.  The apparatus consists of a furnace having gas inlets tangentially inclined and arranged at a number of levels adapted to form a plurality of vortices having a common axis and direction of rotation.
