3638. STEPHENSON, H.P. Catalysts for Hydrogenation Processes, Ammonia and Methanol Synthesis.  British Patent 449,603, June 30, 1936.  Chem. Abs., vol. 30, 1936, p. 8538.

Catalytic substances are mixed with a coal-oil mixture, which is then carbonized to yield a coke or semi-coke in which the catalyst is finely distributed.  The catalytic substances may subsequently be reduced or otherwise converted.  The product may be used as produced or ground and, if desired, pelleted with the aid of a binder.  Examples of catalytic materials are (1) Fe oxide or oxalate, with or without admixed promoters, (2) Ni oxide, carbonate nitrate, or formate, (3) Cu oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, or nitrate.
