Coal-tar oils are mixed with a paraffin hydrocarbon mixture b. 180°-350°, preferably a synthetic mixture prepared from CO and H2 and the mixture is treated with a dilute acid, preferably dilute H2SO4, at atmospheric temperature for a short time.  The mixture is then allowed to settle, and the uppermost layer, consisting of a mixture of tar oil and paraffin hydrocarbons, is separated, washed, and dried and may then be used as fuel for diesel motors.  Gives example.
