PATENT

3616. ----- [STEINKOHLEN-BERGWERK “RHEINPREUSSEN”].  Treating Coal-Tar and Like Tar Oils; Diesel Fuels.  British Patent 502,862, Mar. 24, 1939; appl. filed Sept. 24, 1937.  No. 25,879, Convention date Sept. 24, 1936.  British Chem. Abs., B, 1939, p. 574; Chem. Abs., vol. 33, 1939, p. 7082.

Coal or like tars are produced and diesel fuels are formed by mixing the tar oils with paraffinic hydrocarbons of b. p. 180°-250° C. obtained in a benzine synthesis process and treating at atmospheric temperature with acid of at most 40% concentration.  Washing drying and bleaching may follow.  for example, 35 kg. of coal tar oil b. p. 180°-350° C. is mixed with 17 kg. oil of the same b. pl obtained in the Fischer-Tropsch benzine synthesis shaken with 15 1. of 20% H2SO4 and either centrifuged or allowed to settle, and the 3 layers are separated.  The raffinate is washed, dried, and treated with bleaching earth; the acid is reused, and the sediment is worked up to obtain heating oil or extract phenols.
