PATENT

3605. ----- [STEINKOHLEN-BERGWERK “RHEINPREUSSEN”].  [Production of Lubricants.]  German Patent Appl. St 60,695, PA 337,431, filed May 7, 1941 (Cl. 12 o-1.01).  FIAT Reel B-196, frames 896-901; PB 83,253.

In the process for making lubricating oil by condensing chlorinated, saturated, and/or unsaturated hydrocarbons with or without aromatic hydrocarbons, there is used as the catalyst an impure Al containing foreign metals such as duralumin or metals alloyed therewith, such as Cu, Mg, Si, Mn, or other metals of groups 1,2,3,4,7, and 8.  Activating the catalyst with Hg is not necessary.  It is enough to add the catalyst to the mixture to be condensed and stir thoroughly.  The reaction is then complete in 2.5 hr.  Treating the catalyst with HCl will shorten the reaction time still more to 1-1.25 hr., whereas addition of 15% of AlCl3 reduces it to 50-60 min.  The same effect is obtained by adding an Al compound, which is obtained by the conversion at 60°-100° of chlorinated paraffin hydrocarbons b. 150°-350° with Al.  Gives an example of the process and presents data on the yields and properties of the product using various Al catalysts.
