Describes process for separating a preferentially oil-soluble organic oxygenated compound selected from the group consisting of alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones from a solution thereof comprising predominantly hydrocarbons.  The solution is contacted with an aqueous extractant solution containing a substantially nonsurface-active salt of a preferentially oil-soluble carboxylic acid and stratifying and separating an aqueous extract containing the oil-soluble organic oxygenated compound.
