1 molecular proportion of P oxychloride is reacted with 3 molecular proportions of a branched chain alcohol having 8-20 C atoms in the molecule or a mixture of such alcohols obtained by reacting CO and H2 in presence of a catalyst and an olefin or mixture of olefins containing 7-19 C atoms per molecule.  The resulting aldehydes are hydrogenated.
