3560. ----- [STANDARD OIL CO.]  Synthesis of Motor Fuel Hydrocarbons.  British Patent 591,989, Sept. 4, 1947; appl. filed May 8, 1944.  Fuel Abs., vol. 3, 1948, abs. 147; Chem. Abs., vol. 42, 1948, p. 740.

Powdered Fischer-Tropsch catalyst is charged to a vertical reaction zone.  Upwardly through this catalyst is passed a stream of H2 and CO at a velocity of 0.5-10 ft. per sec.  The catalyst is thereby maintained in a highly agitated, turbulent, and ebullient state.  An elevated temperature and pressure are maintained in the reaction zone, and the gaseous reaction products are passed from the catalyst into a disengagement chamber.  The velocity of the gases is reduced, allowing the entrained catalyst to fall back to the reaction zone while the reaction products free of catalyst are recovered from the top of the reaction zone.  The temperature of the reactants in the reaction zone is maintained 400°-410° F. by causing a cooling fluid to flow continuously in heat exchange relationship with the catalyst.  The pressure is 5-150 p. s. i.
