PATENT

3559. ----- [STANDARD OIL CO.]  Synthesis of Hydrocarbons and Oxygenated Derivatives.  British Patent 653,915, May 19, 1948.  British Abs., B, I, 1951, p. 864. Chem. Abs., vol. 46, 1952, p. 712.

1:1-2 mixture of H2 and CO, containing 2-8 vol. % of moisture is passed over an Fe group catalyst such as Fe promoted by 1-8% of an alkali-metal compound (K2O) at 175°-315° per 200-700 p. s. i.  (space velocity 2-30, preferably 10 ft.3 per lb. of catalyst per hr.) to give oxygenated hydrocarbons.  After separation of the latter, unchanged gases are passed at 10-75 ft.3 per lb. of catalyst over spent catalyst at 295°-00° per 200-500 p. s. i. to give hydrocarbons useful as motor fuel.  Addition of steam to the synthesis gas minimizes deposition of C on the catalyst.
