Fe-containing catalyst, suitable for use in promoting the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2, is formed by incorporating a fluoborate into Fe oxide, Fe hydroxide or an Fe oxide ore in amounts such that the catalyst contains approximately 0.2-10 wt. %, based on the Fe present, of the fluoborate and reducing at least a part of the Fe oxide to the metallic stage before or after incorporation of the fluoborate.
