Nonvolatile carbonaceous material is gasified by means of heat and steam to obtain CO and H2 which are treated catalytically to produce normally liquid hydrocarbons and a combustible gas.  The liquid hydrocarbons are withdrawn and a part of the combustible gas is recycled in the thermal treatment of the carbonaceous material.
