Improved yields of alcohols are obtained by flushing the products of the synthesis aldehydes from olefins, CO, and H₂, with H₂ before the hydrogenation of the aldehydes to alcohols.  This flushing removes CO and metal carbonyl formed from the catalyst; the flush gases can be used for the synthesis.
