Liquefied bituminous carbonaceous raw material is burned in a single reaction vessel containing a fluidized bed of refractory material.  Pure O2 with regulated quantities of added steam to supply H2 is used.  The temperature in the lower part of the retort is 1,500°-2,000° F., in the upper part 3,000°.  In some instances, to produce a gas of certain composition, CO2 is introduced into the bottom of the reactor with the O2 and steam.
