PATENT

3485. ----- [STANDARD OIL CO.]  Cracking Oils; Catalytic Processes and British Patent 590,882 Oct. 30, 1942; appl. filed Sept. 12, 1941.

In fluid catalyst processes such as cracking, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, partial carbonization of coal and production of Fe carbonyl from Fe oxide and CO, the velocities of the solids and fluids are controlled to maintain a dense phase of solids and gases in the reaction zone.  The solids are introduced at the top of the reactor and the fluids at the bottom so that they flow is countercurrent.  The reaction chamber is provided with perforated baffles, bubble trays, and packings similar to those used in a fractionating tower so that separate fluidized layers are formed.
