Gas containing CO and H2 in synthesis proportions is contacted with a catalyst containing 90-99.5% of an oxide of Fe and 0.1-10% of K fluoride and reduced at a high temperature before use.  Example:  Normally liquid hydrocarbons are obtained from a gaseous mixture containing 0.6-3 mol. of H2 per mol. CO at 260°-370° and 3-25 atm. pressure with a catalyst containing 99% of oxide of Fe and 1% of K fluoride.
