Process for the synthesis of hydrocarbons, which comprises contacting a gas mixture containing CO and H2 in synthesis proportions under hydrocarbon synthesis conditions of temperature and pressure with a catalyst comprising a trivalent Fe oxide and at least an equimolecular proportion of 1 or more oxides of 1 or more bivalent metals other than Fe, which will form a spinel type compound with the Fe oxide or products obtained by reducing such mixtures.
