3470. ----- [STANDARD OIL CO.]  Catalytic Improvement of Hydrocarbon Synthesis Product.  British Patent 641,121, Aug. 2, 1950; appl. filed Mar. 18, 1948.  Chem. Abs., vol. 44, 1950; appl. filed Mar. 18, 1948.  Chem. Abs., vol. 44, 1950, p. 11,067.

The gasoline prepared by Fischer-Tropsch-type synthesis is upgraded in the presence of severly deactivated cracking catalyst such as 87:13 wt. ratio silica-alumina, 65:35 wt. ration silica-magnesia or bentonitic clay.  Catalyst preferably contains up to 1% Fe contamination.  The process is carried out in the vapor phase at 800°-1,000° F. with liquid hourly space velocity 2-5.  Results are superior to bauxite treatment yielding more gasoline of higher octane number with less coke deposit.  Octane number increase is due predominantly to isomerization of olefins.  Includes examples of pilot-plant tests.
