Improved Fisher synthesis process comprises contacting a gas containing CO and H₂ in synthesis proportions under synthesis conditions with an Fe type catalyst comprising an Fe oxide reduced by an amount between 5-50% of complete reduction and containing between 0.5-5% of an alkali metal promoter.
