Roasted pyrite material, such as pyrite, marcasite, or pyrrhotite is pulverized, mixed with an alkaline activating agent, and reduced at 370°-538° in a H2 atm. with H2.  The temperature is then raised to 870°, and the material treated several hours at this temperature.  About 3% of K2CO3 is added as the activating agent.
