Higher alcohols occurring in the hydrogenation of CO at high pressure are recovered from the crude oil mixture by extraction.  Bases such as NaOH or K2CO3 or salts such as NaCl or Na acetate are added to lower the solubility of alcohols in H2O.  Pentane, isopentane, hexane, or propane can be used as solvents.
