A mixture of C2H2, H2, and CO is prepared by submitting gaseous hydrocarbons such as CH4, to the action of an electric are with the addition of a compound yielding O such as CO2 or steam.  The proportions may be chosen so that the H2 and CO are in the right proportions for the synthesis of MeOH.
