Nitrides of metals such as Fe, Co Ni, W, and Mo are prepared by heating the metal in a N2 containing gas at ordinary or low pressure in the presence of N compounds of Li.  NH3 is synthesized by passing a mixture of N2 and H2 at atmospheric or other pressure and at 550°-600° over a mixture of a metal of the Fe group, a N compound of Li. and an oxide of a metal of Al group.
