Catalysts for the synthetic production of MeOH and higher alcohols are prepared by igniting a starting material comprising a decomposable carbonate of a known MeOH catalyst and then forming the product into pellets.  Precipitated basic Zn carbonate or Zn and Cr carbonates may be used, and a catalyst containing Cr and Mn also is mentioned.
