Sulfonic acids or sulfonates obtained by the action of a halogen and SO2 on aliphatic hydrocarbons followed by saponidication are used to break oil emulsions.  The hydrocarbons, b. 190°-240°, are obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of C oxides.
