3336.  SHABAKER, H. A. (Houdry Process Corp.)  Forming Gaseous Sulfides and Sulfidation.  Therewith.  United States Patent 2,494,587, Jan. 17, 1950; appl. filed Dec. 4, 1947, Serial No. 789,611;  17 claims (Cl. 252-450).  Chem. Abs., vol. 44, 1950, p. 4211.

Application of the invention is shown in the following example:  Propane is burned in air to give, after drying, a composition of 1.3 mol. % H2, 1.6mol. % CO, 12.7% mol. %CO2 and 84.4 mol. % N2 by vol.  The gas is heated to 1,350° F. and 5 mol. % free S is added to the gas stream in finely powdered form or as atomized liquid.  The hot mixture is brought in contact with a clay such as acid-activated montmorillonite in pelleted form for 2 hr.  The total volume of gas is sufficient to provide H2S and CS2 in 4 times the equivalent the oretically required to convert the Fe present in the Clay (2% as Fe2O5) to Fe sulfide.  The Fe sulfide is removed from the clay by leaching.  3 United States Patents cited.
