Catalytic hydrogenation of CO takes place in the liquid phase with fixed or granular catalyst, the liquid medium and the synthesis gas flowing in the same direction through the catalyst packing.  The liquid medium is carried off from the catalyst packing below the uppermost catalyst level and to the cooling apparatus.  Diagram.
