Mixtures of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and esters or other O-containing compounds of a higher order than MeOH, such as may be obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of oxides of C, are treated in the vapor phase with H2 at a temperature at least of 50° (but < the temperature at which decomposition of the  organic compounds would begin) in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst, such as a; Ni-Cu or Ni-Al catalyst.  This treatment serves to improve the color and odor of the material.
