PATENT

3288. ----- [SCHMIDT, O, AND UFER, H.].  (I. G. Farbenindustrie A. G.).  [Methyl Alcohol.] German Patent 600,677, July 28, 1934 (Cl. 12 o-5.01). Chem. Abs., vol. 28, 1934, p. 7267.

In preparing MeOH by the catalytic reduction of CO by H2  under high temperature and pressure, the mixture of CO and H2 in suitable proportions is passed over the catalyst at 200°-250°.  The catalyst contains 1 or more catalytic elements, together with V or Mn or both. Cr or neighboring elements of the 6th group are not used with Mn.  Thus, the catalyst may be prepared by dissolving CdCO3 in HNO3, adding Zn(NO3)2 and Mn(NO3)3 and precipitating by adding K2CO3.  The precipitate is washed and mixed with a carrier, such as pumice, and dried to form the catalyst. The reaction temperature is 250°-300° for this catalyst.
