In making MeOH by the catalytic reduction of CO by means of H2, the catalyst consists of compounds of Ti or metals of the 4th group of the periodic table, with optional addition of other activators.  Thus, the catalysts may be made by soaking asbestos fiber with Th(NO3)4and Cu(NO3)2 solution, treating KOH and heating to 200° in a current of H2.  Addition to German Patent 565,880 (abs. 3765).
