CO is caused to react on a sulfidic compound of at least 1 metal, such as Ni or Fe, capable of forming a metal carbonyl, under conditions of temperature and pressure that are suitable for producing the metal carbonyl from the free metal and that serve for converting the sulfide into carbonyl.
