Ferrosoferric oxide containing K2CO3 as promoter is 1st treated with CO at temperatures below 400°, for example, 260°-400°, at most for 30 min.  After interrupting the CO stream, the temperature is reduced to 205°-371° and a mixture of CO and H2 is passed over the catalyst.
