3264.  SCHEXNAILDER, R. E., JR.  (Standard Oil Development Co.)  Oxo Synthesis followed by Hydrogenation to Alcohols.  United States Patent 2,500,913, Mar. 14, 1950; original appl. Oct. 31, 1946, Serial No. 707,033; divided and this appl. Jan. 23, 1948, Serial No. 4,059; 6 claims ( Cl. 260-632).

Preparation is given for a catalyst especially good for the Oxo synthesis.  Silica hydrogel is impregnated with salts of Co, Th, and Cu,  and the salts are decomposed at 400°-600° F. for 1-6 hr.  The composition is silica 15-70%, preferably 60%, Co 20-40%, preferably 30%, Th 3-8%, Cu below 5%, preferably 1-3%.  the catalyst is activated at 800°-1200° F.  1 literature ref., 1 foreign patent, and 4 United States patents are cited.
