Hydrocarbons containing more than 1 C atom are produced with use of Co-containing catalysts, in the preparation of which a reducible Co compound, such as the carbonate, is gradually precipitated from a solution of a Co salt, such as Co(NO3)2, during a period at least of 3 hr., suitably by use of K2CO3 and in the presence of diatomaceous earth.
