3246.----- .  [SCHARMANN, W. G. ]  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Production of Hydrogen-Containing Gas Under Pressure.  United States 2,537,708, Jan. 9, 1951; appl. filed Aug. 11, 1945, Serial No. 610,342; 2 claims (Cl. 23-212).Chem. Abs., vol. 45, 1951, p. 2653.

Gives 2-stage process for preparation of synthesis gas.  In the 1st stage steam, hydrocarbon-containing process gas and CO2, if desired, are reformed in presence of a suitable catalyst, and superatmospheric pressure.  The product, containing Co, H2, CO2, H2O, and some hydrocarbon gas, is passed through an oxidizing zone where part of remaining hydrocarbon gas is converted to CO and H2 at temperatures higher than those used in the 1st stage and superatmospheric pressure equal or lower (due to pressure drop) than those in the 1st stage.  The hydrocarbon-process gas feed stream may be split with 1 part forced through the reforming stage and the other forced directly to the oxidizing zone.  4 United States patents cited.
