Contact catalysts for synthesizing hydrocarbons out of CO and H2 are treated with CO2 to render them immune to air.  The contacts are then arranged within the reaction oven.  To lower the initial activity of the catalyst, the layers that first come in contact with the reacting gases are treated with the solid or liquid synthesized product within the reaction oven.
