Contact catalysts used for synthesizing hydrocarbons from CO and H2 are treated in their reduced state with solutions of alkalies in an organic solvent.  The solvent is anhydrous or H2O-poor, preferably an alcohol.  The saturation of the catalyst with alkalies is carried out in the contact furnace, whereupon the solvent is distilled off.
