Complex olefin mixture obtained by a Fischer-Tropsch reaction and boiling substantially within the rang 150°-600° F. is treated with a saturated solution of an alkali metal salt of a monohydroxy aromatic compound such as m-cresol (an aqueous solution of K m-cresylate is preferred).  An extract layer and a raffinate layer are formed; the 2 layers are separated, and the raffinate layer is converted into the synthetic lubricant.
