Valuable wax acids are obtained by the oxidation of synthetic hard paraffin with chromic acid or nitrous gases in the presence of nitrosyl H₂SO₄; neutralization with concentrated KOH; extraction with a hydrocarbon fraction boiling below the softening point of the reactants, suitably a heptane fraction; and splitting by treatment with mineral acids.
