Calcium impurity in Co nitrate solution prepared in reworking catalysts is precipitated by a soluble fluoride in the presence of added Mg (nitrate). Any excess of soluble fluoride over that required to precipitate Ca will precipitate as Mg F₂, thus leaving no fluoride when Na₂CO₃ is added.
