Process for the treatment of Co catalysts that are produced by the precipitation of the catalytically active metals in the presence of kieselguhr and that are employed for benzine synthesis from CO and H2 by dissolving in HNO₃ and reprecipitating the catalytically active constituents in which the spent catalysts are treated with HNO₃ that contains no more than 20% and preferably no more than 3-5%, of free HNO₃.
