3120.----- [RUHRCHEMIE, A. G.]  [Process for Preparing Cobalt-Magnesium Catalysts for the Conversion of Carbon Monoxide-Hydrogen Mixtures.]  German Patent 764,643, Sept. 27, 1937; appl. R 100,366, R 360 (Cl. 12 o-1.03).  TOM Reel 37, bag 3,451, item 35, 3 pp.; Auszüge deut. Patent-Anmeldungen, vol. 6, p. 295; Meyer Transl. PC-S-II, Fischer-Tropsch, vol. 4, ch. 128, 1949, p. 9.

In preparing Co-Mg catalysts for the catalytic conversion of CO-H2 mixtures by the simultaneous or consecutive precipitation of the Mg and Co from the solution of their nitrates or chlorides, use is made of  a Mg solution showing a larger content of Mg than corresponds to the stoichlometric ratio of Mg:Co in the catalyst under preparation.  Example:  A solution containing 24.91 gm. Co in the form of the nitrate and 3.97 gm MgO likewise in the form of the nitrate (thus 16 parts MgO : 100 parts of Co) is precipitated at the boiling temperature with a 10% Na2CO3 solution.  1-2 min. being required altogether.  The necessary amount of carrier substance is introduced and immediately filtered.  A precipitate is obtained that contains in addition to the total amount of Co, 2.42 gm. of MgO, that is, 9.75 parts MgO: 100 parts of Co.
