Catalysts of Co or Ni made by precipitation from their sulfate solutions by soda are subjected to an activating wash with a solution of alkali hydroxide or carbonate of a comparatively lower concentration than the precipitating solution, for example, 0.1 N or less.  The activation wash may be preceded by a wash with H2O.
