In recovering carboxylic acids or their derivatives from soap concentrates obtained by treatment of the primary products of CO-hydrogenation with alkali liquor according to German Patent Appl. R 115,143 (abs. 3084), the free alkali in the concentrates is first neutralized by the addition of crude carboxylic acids obtained from these concentrates, the mixture is melted and by means of distillation, if necessary with the addition of steam, is freed of H2O and the greater part of the unsaponifiable is expelled from the highly porous comminuted mass by means of heated gasses or vapors, such as air, steam, combustion gases, or the like and/or the use of vacuum.
