Unsaturated hydrocarbons b. 60°-200° obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of CO are first passed, with heating over a catalyst containing Al₂O₃ for the purpose of converting the hydroxyl impurities contained therein into olefins. The hydrocarbons obtained in this manner are then treated during heating with an alkaline agent such as soda lime and then subjected to condensation and polymerization in known manner. A greatly increased yield of 5-7% or more of lubricating oil is obtained.
