In preparing higher molecular weight compounds from low molecular weight olefins by the catalytic addition of water gas and subsequent alkaline fusion. the latter is carried out with the amount of alkali calculated from the carbonyl number. The advantage of this method is that the carboxylic acids obtained from the alkaline fusion of the corresponding aldehydes are not split but can be recovered as such if only the amount of alkali corresponding to the carbonyl number of the crude aldehydes is used.
