3046. ----- [RUHRCHEMIE, A. G.]  [Process for Preparing Alkali-Free, Salvelike Water-in-Oil Emulsions.]  German patent Appl. --, R 696, filed Jan. 6, 1944.  TOM Reel 37, bag 3,451, item 36, 3 pp.; meyer Transl. PC-S-IV, Wax  Oxidation, vol. 2, chap. 25, 1948, p.24.

In preparing emulsions of the above type, the oil phase is emulsified with the addition of high-molecular alcohols, which contain 20 C atoms or more to the molecule.  The alcohols as used are obtained through the reduction of the fatty acids, which result from the treatment of the paraffins produced in the catalytic hydrogenation of CO, with nitrous gases in presence of nitrosylsulfuric acid or through oxidation with alkali bichromate-H2SO4.  Emulsions made by this method have the advantage that they can be prepared completely free from alkali or sulfonate.  They are particularly useful in making pharmaceutical or cosmetic preparations.
