CO and H₂ are catalytically converted under pressure and with recycling of part of the reaction product.  A Co catalyst is used with synthesis gas, which contains not more than 1.5 parts if H₂ to 1 part of CO, preferably  1.0 CO: 1.3 H₂, a ratio of recycle gas to synthesis gas  of about 3:1 being used.
