Chlorinated hydrocarbons containing > 2 C atoms to the molecule, such as Fischer-Tropsch paraffin gatsch b. 320°-460°, are mixed and fused with 2 or more finely-divided metals or metal oxides.  Freshly burned Ca oxide is suitable.  The fused melt is poured into molds and allowed to solidify.  It is ignited with thermite or the like and yields a heavy smoke.
