3023. ----- [RUHRCHEMIE, A. G.]  [Process for Improving Lubricating Oils.]  German Patent Appl. --, R415, filed Oct. 31, 1938.  TOM Reel 37, bag 3,451, item 35, 2 pp.

Previously the oxidation stability of lubricants obtained by the polymerization of synthetic unsaturated hydrocarbons was improved by the addition of S.  It is now found that other elements of group 6 of the periodic system have the same effect.  The finished polymerizates are now treated at elevated temperature with Se or Te.  Before adding these the lubricating oil is treated with bleaching earth and , if desired, followed by distillation.  Besides amounts of about 0.1-1% of Se and Te, various % of vulcanization accelerators and 20-100% of the Se and Te are added.  After the reaction is finished the oils are subjected to vacuum steam distillation up to 180°-245° to remove any volatile Se or Te compounds as well as any unreacted traces of accelerators.
