In making Fe catalysts for carrying out the catalytic hydrogenation of CO at temperatures of 225°-230° and with a consumption of virtually 1 space volume of CO, by precipitation from Fe nitrate solutions with the aid of soda and with addition of kieselguhr and subsequent reduction with H_2, the kieselguhr is added in such an amount that the Fe content of the finished catalyst lies 150-350 gm. per 1., and the alkalinity of the mass is adjusted in accordance with German Patent appl. R 108,338 (abs. 2947) by precipitation, washing, or impregnation, whereby reduction takes place at temperatures of about 300° or less.
