In making Fe catalysts for carrying out the catalytic hydrogenation of CO at temperatures of 225°-230° and with a consumption of virtually 1 space volume of CO, by precipitation from Fe nitrate solutions with the aid of soda and with addition of kieselguhr and subsequent reduction with H2, the kieselguhr is added in such an amount that the Fe content of the finished catalyst lies 150-350 gm. per 1., and the alkalinity of the mass is adjusted in accordance with German Patent appl. R 108,338 (abs. 2947) by precipitation, washing, or impregnation, whereby reduction takes place at temperatures of about 300° or less.
